Bert and Beth

SONNET #43, FROM THE PORTUGUESE:
How do I Love Thee?
By Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints! --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

I was introduced to this poem in highschool. Back then, it was just some poem we had to interpret line by line. No more than homework. (And perhaps then, my romantic bone wasn't fully developed yet. hehehe!)

A few days ago, the title popped up on my mind from out of nowhere. Reading the lines again made me realize i should have paid more attention to my fave English teacher. Maybe if I had, I would have memorized it beyond the first line. hehehe. This is my second chance.

She and Robert must really be in love ne? Saya siguro nila!

Tugudug ko, para sayo to. =)

salamat sa tula =)... ako rin may tula para sa yo:

The Presence of Love
by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

And in Life's noisiest hour,
There whispers still the ceaseless Love of Thee,
The heart's Self-solace and soliloquy.

You mould my Hopes, you fashion me within;
And to the leading Love-throb in the Heart
Thro' all my Being, thro' my pulse's beat;
You lie in all my many Thoughts, like Light,
Like the fair light of Dawn, or summer Eve
On rippling Stream, or cloud-reflecting Lake.

And looking to the Heaven, that bends above you,
How oft! I bless the Lot that made me love you.

Are they in love? If you are not in love, you cannot write poems like that =)

Nor can you appreciate it if you aren't =)
